A positive attitude and strong determination
are the pre-requisites for any gay or lesbian before coming out and declaring
his or her sexual orientation. By coming out a homosexual discloses his or
her real identity which might not be acceptable to his family and social
circle. The reactions can be devastating for an individual who at times is
not ready for those highly inappropriate remarks making situation go beyond
control. What is important to remember is that, coming out is a lengthy process
and might take years. Therefore, an individual needs to fully explore his
sexual orientation and preferences because one decision can alter his or
her entire life. It needs a careful thinking process whom to approach first
while coming out with one's real identity. A typical gay or lesbian would
prefer to identify the real self to a person he or she is more comfortable
with.
One also needs to make it clear that coming
out of the closet definitely involves an element of risk. Certain heterosexual
groups might hold strong feelings of resentment towards homosexuals. Before
coming out, gays and lesbians should question themselves whether they are
ready for the opposition, rejection and discrimination the society would
offer them? The anti hate crimes have increased in number not only against
the gay and lesbian individuals but also against their respective families.
Being a part of the minority community the coming out process involves big
challenges that demand courage and determination. Looking at the positive
aspect of the issue, coming out can provide a definite relief to the individual
who has been suffering from lack of self-expression all these years. It can
lead to socialization with other gay or lesbian counterparts and at times
initiate a positive relationship with them.
